You set up the automation, commented the keyword yourself, and… nothing. Before assuming the tool is broken: comment-to-DM failures almost always trace back to one of seven causes, and six of them you can fix yourself in under two minutes. Work down the list in order — it’s sorted by how often each one turns out to be the culprit.
1. The keyword didn’t actually match
The classic. The automation watches for LINK and the commenter typed Link ,
link!, or 1ink. Check what the test comment actually contained — copy it from
the comment into the editor and compare character by character. Two settings matter:
- Exact vs any word. Some setups match only the full comment (“LINK” alone); others fire when the keyword appears anywhere in it. Comment “LINK please” against an exact-match automation and nothing happens — that’s correct behavior, not a bug.
- Extra punctuation and emoji. “LINK!! 🔥” can fail a strict matcher.
2. The Instagram account isn’t a Business or Creator account
This blocks the whole pipeline, not just one comment: the Graph API — the official channel every legitimate automation runs on — only works with Business or Creator accounts. A personal account can sign up for tools but the comment events never arrive. The fix is free and takes about two minutes in Instagram’s settings (Switch to professional account). If your automation has never fired, check this first.
3. The automation is pointed at the wrong post
Most comment automations can be scoped two ways: to one specific post/Reel or to everything you publish. If yours watches a specific Reel, comments on your other posts correctly do nothing. Also check the obvious: the automation may be paused or unpublished after your last edit.
4. The daily send allowance ran out
Every platform caps sends to keep accounts inside Meta’s comfort zone — on AutomateDM’s free plan that’s 500 DMs a day, resetting daily. After a giveaway or a viral post, you can genuinely hit it. The symptom is distinctive: everything worked during the spike, then went silent. The fix is waiting for the reset (or upgrading for unlimited sends) — and it’s worth reading why that cap exists before removing it from your life.
5. The 24-hour window closed
Meta only allows an automated DM within 24 hours of a user’s interaction. For comment triggers this rarely bites (replies go out in seconds) — but it explains “the automation works for new comments but won’t re-send to the same person.” That’s Meta’s rule working as designed, not a failure. If you need to reach the same person again, the path is a new interaction from them — or your email list.
6. The connection expired and needs a reconnect
Instagram access tokens don’t live forever — password changes, permission revocations, and periodic expiry all sever the link. The tell-tale: the automation worked for weeks, then silently stopped around a specific date. The fix: reconnect the account from your tool’s settings (AutomateDM also emails you before tokens expire, so you usually get warning before anything breaks).
7. The commenter’s account is restricted
If one person reports “it didn’t DM me” while everyone else gets replies, their account may be action-blocked or have DMs from strangers limited — nothing on your side fixes that, and nothing on your side caused it. One failed recipient among hundreds of successes is noise, not signal.
