Should you auto-DM new Instagram followers? How to do it right

A new follower just raised their hand. Auto-DMing them a welcome message can turn that into a conversation, a sale, or a superfan — or it can read as a cold pitch and get you muted. The difference is entirely in what you send. This guide shows the value-first version.

The honest framing

Nobody owes your auto-DM a read. They followed you for your content — the welcome message is a bonus, not a billboard. The ones that work feel like hospitality: quick, warm, useful. The ones that get muted open with "Hey! I help brands grow 🚀". Write yours like you're greeting a guest, not opening a deal.

Setting it up

  1. connectConnect your Instagram Business or Creator account to AutomateDM.
  2. triggerCreate a new automation and choose the new follower trigger.
  3. messageWrite the welcome: one line of genuine thanks, one useful thing (your best resource, a first-timer discount, the "start here" link), and one easy question if you want a reply rate.
  4. publishPublish. Every new follower gets it once, automatically.

Welcome DMs that don't feel like spam

  • Lead with thanks, not the offer. "Thanks for the follow! 🙏" first; the resource second.
  • Give, then ask. Your best free resource earns more replies than a discount code.
  • One message, one link. A wall of links on first contact is how brands end up restricted.
  • Send once. One welcome per person — AutomateDM's send-once option makes sure a re-follow doesn't ping them again.

FAQs

Is auto-DMing new followers allowed by Instagram?

Yes, when it runs on the official Instagram Graph API like AutomateDM does — the follower chose to follow you, and the API enforces Meta's messaging rules. What gets accounts in trouble is bulk cold DMs to non-followers, which this is not.

What should I actually send?

Thanks + one useful thing. A start-here link, a first-order discount, your best free guide. If you wouldn't say it to someone who walked into your shop, don't DM it.

Will it DM the same person again if they refollow?

No — turn on send-once-per-person and each follower only ever gets one welcome.
